Finecto+ methode for horses
The Finecto + Method in horses consists of two perspectives: the winter and summer period. In the winter you can see that the parasites mites and lice find the heat in horses. In the summer, insects such as mosquitoes are the cause of itching and irritation (sweet itch).
Winter – Mites and lice
It is essential that all ectoparasites are reached. The natural properties of the herbs and essential oils in Finecto+ Horse reach all of the lice and mites on the horse through the blood. The herbs and essential oils in Finecto+ Horse make the horse unappealing to the ectoparasites and make the blood and/or skin indigestible for these parasites, with the result that they will abandon the animal, be unable to reproduce and eventually disappear altogether. It is only possible to tackle the eggs and nits on the horse after they have hatched and started to eat. To this end we recommend adding Finecto+ Horse to the horse’s food for at least one month.
Mites and lice are not just found on the horse itself but also in the immediate environment. In order to solve the problem quickly and to prevent further infection we recommend that you clean equipment like blankets, saddles, girths and brushes regularly. Make sure too that the stables are clean and dry at all times. Pay particular attention to other horses that may be carrying lice or mites but show no symptoms. Contact with and between these horses can lead to reinfection so they should be treated too.
With regard to problems like greasy heel, CPL, sores, etc. caused by mites and lice, Finecto+ Horse is only effective at tackling the cause. Treatment using Finecto+ Protect (spray) can also help. In the case of very serious problems always consult your vet.
Approach mites in horses
Usually it takes around one and a half yeat to get rid of all mites. A descent approach consists of one product. It consists of a range of measures. Try to apply as much measures as you can:
1 – Begin treatment with Finecto+ Horse as soon as possible
Mites propagate extremely rapidly. The longer you wait, the bigger the population will get. It’s important therefore to not wait too long to start treatment.
2 – Don’t expect the mite infection to be gone after a month
Whatever treatment you use, assume from the outset that it will take some time before you see results, especially if the population is large. Do not stop treatment once the problem appears to be resolved, as there may still be mite eggs remaining in the coat.
3 – Use a natural product
Mites can develop resistance against chemical control products. Sometimes after two consecutive treatments, the next treatment has no effect anymore, indicating that it’s likely that the mites have developed resistance.
4 – Don’t forget about ‘carrier’ horses
Mites are highly contagious, with multiple horses often being infected at the same time. But not all the horses will show symptoms, though. When only the horse showing symptoms is treated, the mites keep coming back by way of the untreated horses. Treatment is therefore only effective if all the horses are treated.
5 – Ensure optimum health
Horses that are susceptible to mites often already have a lowered immune function. Such horses will more readily show itching symptoms since the body simply is less effectively able to deal with the bites from mites. Make sure to optimise the horse’s resistance by giving the horse a detox treatment in the spring and autumn. Furthermore, good health is based on good digestion in horses.
6 – Do yearly preventative treatments
If your horse has had mites in the past, make sure to do a preventative treatment every year at the beginning of the season. This way you’ll ensure that the population remains low when there are still mite eggs from last year in the horse’s coat or in the environment.
7 – Don’t forget about the environment
Mites can survive for up to three weeks in the immediate environment of horses, living for example in the brushes, saddle pads and blankets. Make sure to wash these items regularly and that each horse is designated its own set of brushes, saddle pads and blankets.
8 – Keep an eye on sugar content in the feed
Mites love sugars. Restricting sugars in coarse feed and concentrates is one of the first measures to implement for a horse with a mite allergy.

Summer period – Midges, flies and horseflies
In spring and late summer midges, flies and horseflies can cause problems like sweet itch. The natural herbs and essential oils in Finecto+ Horse also make horses less appealing to midges, flies and horseflies. If your horse is sensitive to these parasites, we recommend that you start with the preventative dosage two weeks before the risk period commences and then continue administering until the risk has abated. Keep in mind that flies and horseflies will continue to seek out the horses but will cause less irritation.
Also in the summer it is important to apply an approach. Finecto+ Horse contributes to this overall approach. Try to apply as many of the following measures as possible to make it as pleasant as possible for your horse with sweet itch:
1 – Detoxification of the horse’s system
Ensure your horse’s immune system is optimal. Detoxify the horse’s system before and after the sweet itch season with therapy that lasts at least a month.
2 – Start using an sweet itch blanket early
An sweet itch blanket can easily be worn under a rain sheet. An sweet itch blanket on its own is not sufficient for preventing sweet itch in summer, but it is an indispensable part of the total strategy.
3 – Start with Finecto+ Horse as soon as the temperature rises above 10 °C
Finecto+ Horse makes your horse unappealing to midges. An sweet itch blanket does not cover the whole of the horse’s body, but a supplement such as Finecto+ Horse does.
4 – Limit sugars in the diet
Sugars are found not only in concentrated feed, but in raw feed and grass too. Check your raw feed for sugar and do not put your horse out in the field the morning after a cold night. Apply strip-grazing to ensure your horse can enjoy the grass section by section.
5 – Allow your horse daily exercise
Exercise in the field is not sufficient. Walk with your horse for at least twenty minutes every day.
6 – Put your horse in the stable at dusk
Midges are most active at twilight. It is therefore advisable not to let your horse out of the stable too early or return it to the stable too late.
7 – Ensure your horse’s weight is optimal
Being overweight or underweight can have a negative effect. Start adjusting the rations and, if necessary, the workload in good time. Bear in mind that it can take months for a horse to lose or gain weight.
